The Paradoxical Twins Acme and Omega Electronics Essay From reading this case study I found that Acme and Omega have problems that need to be looked at. Both firms produce similar products and offer similar services. In this assignment I am going to analyse the forms of control used in Acme and Omega. I will also try and comment on both firms effectiveness. I will try to be thorough as possible. I will first begin to give brief background information on both companies and then try to compare them to one another and try to comment on their effectiveness to the full. To end it I will give my conclusion. From looking into Acme I gained knowledge that its president John Tyler is a very tough going individual. He is portrayed to be an autocratic individual. I say this because he tends to communicate in one way, for example what he says goes. He makes all the decisions and gives out all instructions and orders, expecting them to be obeyed, without question. An employee/ manager categories the president as one man band. He feels that John Tyler should try and give more information rather than giving orders. He also does not take suggestions from people. To me it looks as if there is a slight communication problem. There are times when I wished I had little more information about what is going on. This shows Acme employees are kept in the dark Mushroom management Keep the troop in the dark and pile on the _ _ _ _(work). The managers also feel that they need a little more freedom at work. This shows that John Tyler may be pressurising them constantly. To back up my point some of the managers voiced the desire to have a little more latitude in their jobs The president also is made to look like a tough person and runs the firm well in terms of high standards and good production levels. Managers feel that he runs a tight ship. This shows that he wants everything correct and dead on. This on the other hand shows that Acme has good control and is well structured. Acme is a flat and formal structured organisation, this is an advantage as it is easier to spot problems i.e. communication problem, shows how different sections of the firm relate to each other, it shows who is in charge, who makes and carries the decisions and shows individuals where there positions in the firm is. Having a flat structure makes it quicker to solve problems, less roumous and gossip. Tyler seems like a very confident and strong minded person We have been able to beat Omega regularly for the most profitable contracts thereby, increasing our profits. John Tylers attitude resembles F.W Taylor (1911) views. He believed that these 5 principles increased production: 1. A clear division of tasks and responsibilities between management and workers 2. Enthusiastic co-operation with the workers to ensure that the work was performed in accordance with scientific management principles and this was secured by use of economic incentives. John Tyler carries out methods and procedures the classical way. From reading inside Omega I found that the president Jim Rawls did not believe in organisational charts/ structures. Organisation charts just put artificial barriers between specialists who should be working together. Although I think that Omega is a matrix organisation. I feel that not having an organisational structure does not clearly show what position the employee has in the firm, therefore causes problems within the work force as workers will work in any department. This means that the individual may feel that s/he does not have full responsibilities. The worker also would not have a clear job description, this may effect the firms effectiveness. To back up my point of workers not having a clear job description a worker said When I first got here I wasnt sure what I was supposed to do. One day I worked with some mechanical engineers the next day I helped the shipping department design some packing cartons. This overall can cause low working standards and low morale- low production output. Jim Rawls felt that having an organisational chart would create problems between specialists. I also deduced that Omega had no clear form of communication. I say this because he does not allow written memos, he expressed the plant is small if people want to communicate they can just drop by and talk things over. Employees of Omega complained that this was a waste of time. To me passing round is time consuming and gives workers excuse of talking to one another, this slows down production and performance. Also messages can be misleading if someone passes the wrong message out. This can also cause problems as workers will not get the correct information. Most decisions at Omega were made by the management team. Acme has an organisation structure therefore communication is good although there are improvements that need to be made like the way John Tyler communicates with his managers. Whereas Omega has no structure therefore is causing problems within the firm. Ames president is a person who wants everything perfect. He believes his firms greater effectiveness to his mangers is to run a tight ship. This I think is because his firm would have: * Good control * Good communication * Dept functions * Well structured and organised * Has simple reporting relationship * Concentration on skills. This shows Acmes president has a firm grip whereas Omegas president does not, he seems to be more laid back. Acmes president is autocratic leader as he does what he wants and does not take other workers/ mangers opinions or suggestions into consideration. The advantage of an autocratic style is known as efficient and it is essential in some circumstances. Autocratic leadership produces quicker decisions, however the autocratic style creates frustrations and resentment. Whereas Omegas president is a democratic leader, as he seeks the opinions and suggestions of workers. This shows that he shows interest in his workers. Although he sometimes spends too much of his time informing workers of information. Omegas decisions are made by management team whereas Acmes decisions are made by the president. Acmes president demands rather than speak politely demanded that Mechanical Engineering begins building those damn chassis. On the other hand Jim Rawls spends too much of his time listening to suggestion Jim spends too much time and mine making sure everyone understands what were doing and listening to suggestions. From reading the part where both firms are trying to reach the deadline of completing the units on time and successfully I can comment on both firms. I think Acme did well because of the way they communicated. For example John Tyler sent out a memo to all departments stating the critical time constraints of this job and how he expected that everyone would perform as efficiently as they had in the past. This showed that Tyler was controlling his employees. Although John Tyler put a lot of pressure on his employees. Because Acme had a structure, this allowed them to be well organised, therefore helped and keep everything in control. Whilst trying to complete the units John Tyler and the Head of Industrial Engineering fell into a dilemma. dont bother me with method details now. The Head of Industrial then replies if my boss think our output is needed, to hell with him!. This shows that they both cant work well and communicate with each other. This to me seems like both of these individuals are not working together very professionally. The foreman also didnt listen to the method engineers therefore this slowed down Acme from completing the units. When the units were completed John Tyler should have checked more than just one component as this was not very professional. Acmes president needs to consider taking his workers opinions and suggestions. He should try to talk to them rather than demanding on what he wants. From looking at the way Omega was preparing to complete the units for the photocop ier Jim Rawls gave good advise compared to Tyler. Jim Rawls did not pressure his workers but told his workers what to prepare for. He outlined what the job involved and discussed what was to be started on. Omegas workers seemed to be very organised and methodical, they worked well and communicated well with each other compared to Acmes workers. For example when they decide to check the blue prints all of the engineers agreed after checking and rechecking the blue prints. To back up that they worked well together as a team people from Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering spent Monday night redesigning the cable. This relates to R. Likert 1961. He believed that the structure of an organisation should be formed around effective work groups rather than individuals. He proposed the concept of the overlapping group membership structure. This involved a linking pin process in which the superior member of one group was subordinate member of group above. Likert argued that the benefits of such an organisations design include improved communication increased co- operation and more team commitment and faster decision making. Overall I think Acme got the contract due to many reasons, for example Acme had a structure therefore made it look like Acme has good control. Acme also may have been given the final contract because of there past, as they achieved grater net profit than Omega Acme was consistently more effective than Omega and regularly achieved greater net profit. Acmes annual sales was also higher than Omegas. Acmes president was also a very confident and demanding man therefore it makes the firm look strong Tyler was very confident that had the demand not been so great, its competitor would not have survived. In the end Acme reduced there costs by 20% therefore the photocopier manufacture gave them the contact as it would have been more cheaper to buy units. Omega could have used the same tactics/methods but this may not have been the only thing that could have given them the contract. Things that I could suggest that may have given them the contact would be if they were a larger firm with a clear structure to show that they have some sort of control.

Awareness Of Idhayam Oil Pulling Among Customers Vegetable Oil is a necessity for all the people. Every human being consumes oil day by day. Here is one company called IDHAYAM, the market leader of oil manufacturing product came out with a new idea to enter into health care product. They have explained the method, how to use oil in our mouth this is so called oil pulling therapy. This study is all about to find what is the level of awareness of oil pulling among customers. How do they know the product either by media or by word of mouth and whether have tried the product or not and how long they have been using oil pulling therapy. At the same time there are some benefits out of oil pulling therapy like, to improve oral hygiene and so on. So from this we can find whether they have got the benefits and who are all customers using the therapy continuously? For this I have applied research concepts and conducted a survey to collect the qualitative data to provide how to enhance the awareness if it is low. INTRODUCTION Idhayam is a strong regional brand in the hugely diverse and unorganized edible oil market in India. Indian edible oil market is huge with a consumption of 168 lakh tonnes per year. The market is wide and varied with regional preferences diverse across India. Ground Nut oil is preferred in the Western states in India, Coconut oil and Sesame oil is preferred in the Southern states, Mustard Oil in East and North states, Soya bean oil in Central and North/West states and sunflower oil in most parts of the country. Idhayam is the brand in the sesame oil (Gingelly oil) segment. The brand has a rich heritage of over 60 years. The company came into existence in 1943 and over these years the brand has grown to occupy a major share in the South Indian market. Idhayam brand sells over 13 lakh liters per month Traditionally people use coconut oil; Idhayam is a familiar brand because of the intense promotion by the company. The brand is promoted heavily through television and magazines. The brand uses the famous South Indian Diva Jyothika to endorse the brand. Although the ads are dubbed from Tamil in Malayalam, the heavy and constant bombardment of ads never misses the audience. What is more interesting is the message of the ad. Idhayam means Heart. The brand has its basic values rooted in health platform. I think the brand had this even before the Sunflower brands took over the health positioning. Idhayam is positioned as all-purpose edible oil. The brand talks about low cholesterol content and great taste. The ad also reminds you that the oil is best to apply on hair too. Health + Taste have been the positioning of Idhayam for years now. The company later entered the groundnut oil market with a brand: Mantra Groundnut oil. The success of Idhayam lies in the ability of the company to build the brand. It had been a commodity business but Idhayam added value and now rules this segment. The brand over time has now come out with an innovative marketing strategy Oil Pulling. This is an initiative of the company to pioneer the concept of Oil therapy in the country. Oil Pulling is the method of rinsing the mouth with oil for Twenty minutes by Swishing the oil between the teeth. According to the company reports, this process effectively cures glaucoma and gum diseases. DESIGN OF THE STUDY A brief description of the scientific procedures followed in conducting this study is presented under the following headings: Need for the study Objectives of the study Methodology Sources of data Research instrument NEED FOR THE STUDY The study is conducted to know about the awareness of Idhayam oil pulling practice among customers. There are some simple questions, which helps us to know the need for the study. Whether the customers know about the product? How they came to know about the product, which means which medium helps them to know about the product? Then whether they have tried and how many days they have been using the therapy? Whether they know the therapy/product benefit? OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: To find out the level of awareness of benefits they have been getting by using the product (oil pulling). To provide the possible recommendations to enhance the product awareness among consumers. METHODOLOGY: A survey was conducted for collecting data from the vertical residential segment, especially where the response for product (oil) is high. Non probability purposive sampling method is used to analyze the data. Almost all areas in Chennai city were covered. A questionnaire was prepared on awareness of oil pulling. Details of the area, contact number and details of each customer/consumer were collected. The survey laid emphasis to the questions about experience of oil pulling and benefits out of oil pulling. All customers/consumers were personally interviewed within the set parameters. Study was done according to the details obtained from managers, consumers and also from the gestures of both. Over a period of 10 days I visited, one area at Chennai per day and at least 30 data per day were collected. Every evening after collecting the data, team members gathered and I have discussed with my group mates about the experiences (both quantity and quality) of the data obtained. Details of further action were planned and report of the day was kept updated. SOURCES OF DATA: Primary data: The sources were mainly from primary data. The summer as I was assigned to collect the fresh data without any references from secondary data. RESEARCH DESIGN: Research simply means a search for facts, answers to questions and solution to problem. It is a purposive investigation, an organized inquiry. It seeks to find explanations to unexplained phenomenon, to clarify the doubtful propositions and to correct the misconceived facts. In order to comply with our objective and test our research hypotheses we design a study based on the effect of corporate social responsibility on the consumer purchase behavior. TYPE OF RESEARCH Descriptive Research Descriptive research, also known as statistical research, describes data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. Descriptive research answers the questions who, what, where, when and how. Although the data description is factual, accurate and systematic, the research cannot describe what caused a situation. Descriptive research can be said to have a low requirement for internal validity. Descriptive research deals with everything that can be counted and studied. But there are always restrictions to that. Your research must have an impact to the lives of the people around you. Define population: The population for this study is people who are use situated at Chennai and the area for the study conducted is given by the company itself (Areas: Aalandhur, Adhambakkam, Nanganallur, T Nagar, Adyar, Anna nagar). Sample size: Sample size : 100 I have conducted the study and collected the data in that specified area, which was given my organization. Moreover I have collected many responds, in that i have selected 100 samples based on reliability of the data. Sample type: It is non-probability purposive sample type. This type of sample selects the sample members to conform to some criterion. Here I am conducted the study on awareness of oil pulling. So for my convenience i may want to talk only with those who have experienced the therapy. Collection method: The collection method I have used is SURVEY METHOD QUESTIONNAIRE. The questionnaire contains three categories of measurement question: Administrative questions identify the respondents location. Classification questions it usually cover sociological demographic variables that allow participants answers to be grouped so that patterns are revealed and can be studied. Target questions (structured) address the investigative questions of a specific study with a fixed set of choices; often called as closed questions. Instrument type: The instrument type which I have used is interview schedule. Interview schedule which means I have interviewed the people with the help of questionnaire. Proposed analysis: The questionnaire is full of nominal data type; I have used frequencies, means and cross tabulations. COMPANY PROFILE IDHAYAM AN OVERVIEW: Mr. V. V. And because gum infections are preventable and treatable, taking care of your oral health could very well have a significant impact on your cardiovascular health. WHAT IS OIL PULLING? Our ancestors practiced oil pulling (swishing with oil) many centuries ago. Over the years, the importance of oil pulling lost its significance. However, it is an excellent and very easy method to follow even in these modern times to keep our mouth, teeth and gums clean, strong and healthy. Every morning on waking up, on an empty stomach, take 5 to 10 ml. of unadulterated oil in your mouth. Close your mouth and swish and swirl the oil in such a way that the oil passes through all the gaps between the teeth. By doing this for 15 to 20 minutes, the oil in the mouth turns whitish and frothy. This has to be spat out. Then wash your mouth with clean water. This is the way to do oil pulling. The ideal time to do oil pulling is in the morning hours. However, for those whom doing it in the morning is not convenient, they may also do oil pulling at night before going to bed. BENEFITS OF OIL PULLING: During oil pulling, the oil in the mouth, surrounds the bacteria in the mouth and prevents respiration of the bacteria. This makes the bacteria inactive. The oil when kept in the mouth for a while mixes with the saliva and turns into an emulsified oil. Further, the bicarbonates in the saliva mix with the emulsified oil and change into a week soapy solution. This soapy solution kills and washes away the inactivated bacteria. Thus, disorders and diseases that could have been caused by the bacteria in the mouth are prevented. This soapy solution neither harms the soft buccal tissues nor causes any side effects. Nendel The Arts play a large role in the expression of inner thoughts and beauty in my life. From dance and music to abstract art our concept of life is shown through the various ways in which we interpret it. We use the Arts as a means of touching that part of us that we cannot reach with Physical Science, Social Science, or any of the Humanities. The arts allow us to be as specific or as abstract as we please. It helps us become closer to ourselves and to others around us. Though there has been a lot of confusion as to what the true definition of ââ¬Å"good artâ⬠is, how we show others what is going on in our minds and inner souls cannot be judged, graded, criticized or revised by anyone other than ourselves. The arts play a valued role in creating cultures and developing and documenting civilizations. The arts teach us how to communicate through creative expression. Show us how to understand human experiences, past and present. Prepare us to adapt to and respect the ways others think, work, and express themselves. Music, singing, dancing, poetry, and sketching are just a few of the different forms of art that I use to express myself in a way that I enjoy. Because each art discipline appeals to different senses and expresses itself through different media, each adds a special richness to the learning environment. Arts help people Learn to identify, appreciate, and participate in the traditional and non-traditional art forms of their own communities and the communities of others. Art teaches us how to be imaginative, creative, and reflective. Different art forms help us develop the verbal and nonverbal abilities necessary for lifelong learning. The intellectual demands of the arts help us develop problem-solving abilities and such powerful thinking skills as analyzing and evaluating. Numerous studies point toward a consistent and positive comparison between concrete education in the arts and student achievement in other subjects. A program in arts education would engage students in a process that helps them develop the self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation necessary for success in life. Most important, the arts should be experienced and studied for their own true value. If art was not present in my life, I know that I would be missing so much. I would not be able to do the things that I love to do each day.

A Feminist Analysis of Perceval, Tristan and Isolt, and Aucassin and Nicoletteà à Currently, there is a debate among feminists as to whether the demeaning portrayal of women in popular media causes or is caused by negative attitudes in modern culture. A similar debate exists among historians of the late middle ages as to whether the rise in popularity of the cult of the Virgin, her portrayal in art, and the code of chivalry caused or was caused by changing attitudes towards women. Many factors in the late middle ages coincided to create an entirely new role for women: contact with the Muslim world in Spain, the rising popularity of religious life, and the aforementioned cultural changes. All of these factors are intertwined with the new attitudes that arose around women. Virginity became exalted, femininity was lauded, courtly love turned women into objects of devotion rather than objects of desire. In short, women were placed on a pedestal. The cultural paradox of this shift in attitudes is that by being placed on that pedestal, women became objects rather than individuals. This dichotomy between respect for women as a group and respect for individual women is clearly shown in three Medieval Romances. Perceval, Tristan and Isolt, and Aucassin and Nicolette may vary greatly in plot, tone and style, but the underlying assumption is the same. In the Medieval Romance, women may be objects of devotion, but they are still merely objects to earned, won, owned and do minated. The first example of this attitude is the saga of the damsel whom Perceval boorishly assaults. This woman, never named, is utterly enslaved and abused by men. Perceval, not heeding her protests, forces her into a compromising situation and then robs he... ...band is a Muslim. The Christian king of Biaucaire, by contrast, does not honor her right to self-determination. The Muslim roots of Nicolette's relative freedom serve as one answer to the question of whether this literature is derivative of the culture or whether it shaped the culture. From this evidence, it seems that the former is true. The pervasiveness of the oppressive attitudes demonstrated in these texts show clearly the dichotomous view of women in the late middle ages. The respect of womanhood which was so central to the chivalric code did not translate into greater freedom for women themselves. Modern opponents of feminism claim that the Womenââ¬â¢s Movement has reversed this dichotomy, namely that individual freedoms have devalued women as a group. Perhaps we should ask why our culture has a problem with valuing womanhood and valuing women concurrently. I have been able to sleep much later since the opening of the lane, and that has made all the difference. Analysis of Langston Hughes Poetry

Goodman AASP100 England May 5, 2010 Reaction #2 Langston Hughes Poetry A Literary Analysis of ââ¬Å"The Negro Speaks of Riversâ⬠The Harlem Renaissance can be considered as ââ¬Å"the cultural boomâ⬠in African-American history. Spanning from the 1920s into the mid-1930s, the Harlem Renaissance was an apex in African-American intellectualism. The period is also recognized as the ââ¬Å"New Negro Movementâ⬠ââ¬ânamed after the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke. Alain LeRoy Locke was an American educator, writer, and philosopher, who most consider as the father of the Harlem Renaissance. Historians recall him as a leader and chief interpreter of the movement. In his anthology, he brings out a montage of works by many well-known Africans and African-Americans including such figures as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Jacob Lawrence, Richmond Barth, William Grant Still, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Ralph Bunche, and John Dewey (Locke). One of these figures wrote one of the most profound poems still read today. Langston Hughes was an American poet whose most prominent works came out during the Harlem Renaissance. The poem, ââ¬Å"The Negro Speaks of Riversâ⬠was Hughesââ¬â¢ first published poem and it was his signature too. Only 17 years old when he wrote it, Hughes created the poem while he was on a train headed to Mexico where he would live with his father for a year. As his train crossed the Mississippi River, he was astonished by how beautiful the river was and the thought of how that river had a role in maintaining slavery in America came into his mind and he started writing. Letââ¬â¢s start off with the title. The title has the term ââ¬Å"negroâ⬠in it. Now how can we identify this? Well, the term ââ¬Å"negroâ⬠tells us about the time period which takes us back to the early 20th century when ââ¬Å"negroâ⬠was self-identifiable with the black community for that is the term that they adopted. However, we see that the term is only used in the title which places emphasis on its overall collective meaning of the ideas it portrays. Now let us dive into the poem. There are two metaphorical themes in this poem and they are ââ¬Å"riversâ⬠and ââ¬Å"darkness. â⬠In line one, the Hughes says, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve known rivers. â⬠In this line, ââ¬Å"I,â⬠the speaker, is standing for the entire black community throughout history. All of the rivers mentioned in the poem constitute as part of an extended metaphor that is comparing the souls of black people to the ancient, wise, and great rivers of the Earth (Shmoop). In the line two, the simile, ââ¬Å"as ancient as the world,â⬠is constructed to emphasize the comparison of the age of the rivers to the age of the Earth. In line three, we see rivers being used as a metaphor to depict the rivers of blood that flow through human veins. So the flow of blood in veins is compared to the flow of rivers. In line for, Hughes creates a simile comparing how deep his soul is to how deep the rivers are. Now as we get to line five the story of the path of the black community in history unfolds. In line five we start off with the first river, the Euphrates River, which is supposedly where all life began; known as the cradle of civilization. Hughes notes that he bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young. This symbolizes that there was peace and freedom. Line six entails the black communityââ¬â¢s journey into central western Africa. In line six we continue with the second river, the Congo River, where he built his hut and it lulled him to sleep. The black community is still undergoing peace and freedom. They are building a civilization. In line seven we see Hughes going into the third river, the Nile River. Now in line seven, we can certainly say that freedom hasnââ¬â¢t necessarily stopped, but history has shown that black people amongst white people, and yellow people were slaves and all participated in the building of the pyramids. Lastly, Hughes enters into the fourth and final river, the Mississippi River. Hughes describes here the moment in history when Abraham Lincoln sailed the Mississippi River and he witnessed the horrors of slavery at its finest. In this same line, Hughes has the river come alive when he describes the river singing. In lines nine and ten Hughes creates some imagery when he tells of how the sun setting on the Mighty Muddy Mississippi R. changed its color to gold. He also personifies the river when he depicts it having a ââ¬Å"bosomâ⬠acquiring feminine attributes. The second theme of ââ¬Å"darknessâ⬠can only be seen when literally picking away at the poem. We see that Hughes is very descriptive when he introduces darkness and light throughout the poem. In lines nine and ten we see Hughes describing how the Mississippi R. oes from ââ¬Å"muddyâ⬠to ââ¬Å"goldenâ⬠as the sun departs and the night arrives. So we can also take from this as muddy being a metaphor for skin color when talking about slavery. Once the river becomes golden, slavery is abolished and slaves are freed. As we view the word ââ¬Å"duskyâ⬠when describing the nature of the rivers, the metaphor can be not just for skin color, but also to remind our reader about the authorââ¬â¢s past which haunts him. In line 13 the poem ends with ââ¬Å"My soul has grown deep like the rivers. â⬠What can we take from this? Everytime the black civilization moves to a different point in time, the rivers get deeper, as well as the black manââ¬â¢s soul. The author has seen the upbringing of civilizations, he has contributed in building the pyramids, and he has witnessed slavery being abolished. This poem is a time machine of events. In conclusion, Langston Hughes was a New Negro because as a voice for the black community, through his poetry he influenced other people to take pride in their heritage, culture, and triumphs noting racism when needed while showing pride in the black community. In the first option, from the survey we know that 75% of MedNetââ¬â¢s audience will switch away once charge is introduced, so if 25% agrees to pay we would need to charge approximately $11.50 per visit per month to achieve same profitability of one million. $11.50 seems to be fairly reasonable number, but further elasticity research will be needed. Second option doesnââ¬â¢t solve the problem of flattening the advertising budgets, moreover, additional content will involve extra costs that MedNet wonââ¬â¢t be able to recoup.
